Dr. Caroline Bedell Thomas founded The Johns Hopkins Precursors Study of health and risk factors for hypertension and heart disease. Dr. Thomas launched volunteer participation from medical classes at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) from 1948 - 1964.

The original study, scheduled for 30 years, began with 1,337 students, and continues on with ~900 participants to date in their 60's & 70's, who primarily continue as physicians.
